Here's the picture (click on it for a closer look) and the Daily Mail article does a good job of explaining it, so click on that for the full story.

I've got form with maps on musical themes - a few years ago there was a Tube map created with each line a musical genre, and all the stations different artists, so the intersections were artists who straddled the appropriate genres. I bought it, framed it and stuck it on my wall. I would show you a photo but it's currently being re-framed after my removal guy to Denmark had an unfortunate coming together with a bridge in France. Anyway, that's another story...

You can buy the poster from the creators, an agency called Dorothy. I'd very much recommend you do because it'll look lovely next to your musical Tube map. Or is that just me?MRWhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08054423156521196342noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4293127139881104586.post-10954483340162765012012-05-23T11:17:00.000+01:002012-05-23T11:17:30.309+01:00Your bank card is not as cool as mine.
I listen to this record a lot - it's one of my favourites. And I listened to it just last week - so far, so unremarkable.

The second track on it is Grant Green's Sookie Sookie (at 11 minutes on record it's less a slice of funk and more a whole loaf of it). Here it is.

Then the other day, Dan from the EPPA (who've picked up the torch that the Young Offenders Institute lit), posted this track on Facebook...

I'd never heard of Don Covay, so did some digging prompted by Dan. Turns out he wrote the original Sookie Sookie, which I never knew. Here's that.

Also turns out he wrote it with Steve Cropper, the brilliant guitarist from Booker T & The MG's...

Also one of the MG's was one of the best bassists ever - Donald "Duck" Dunn. Here he is, with Steve Cropper and Ray Charles, amongst others, in The Blues Brothers.

Which all leads back to the very sad news that Duck done died yesterday. So I'm glad I was remembering him anyway, thanks to Dan's mention of Don Covay. Funny how these things come about. Now excuse me while I get back to choosing which Don Covay track to put on The Monthly. MRWhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08054423156521196342noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4293127139881104586.post-83061152745594021552012-05-14T14:21:00.000+01:002012-05-14T14:21:07.047+01:00What time does The Roxy open?As a parting gift when I left London, my friend, co-podcaster and stalwart of indie rock music, Chris, made me this CD.

To explain, I'm gonna have to give you a little insight into Chris and my behaviour together. It's pretty immature, I'm pleased to say. We spent many a night in dingy Soho pubs doing what all men of our age do - harking back to the glory days of yesteryear. And of course music was central to that.

There's a club in London called The Roxy - it's nothing special, but nor is it the worst club in the world. But it does play music that you know. Which is always a bonus in my book. So "what time does The Roxy open?" became code for "I like the song that I'm hearing right now and could see myself enjoying it in The Roxy after 9 beers and no dinner". Like I said, kind of immature, but in a good way.

Now the fact that in our couple of years of Soho drinking we only went to The Roxy, I think, twice, didn't stop it becoming a motto for our friendship. So this CD was a very fitting way for him to see me off. And if you're still reading, you may be wondering what constitutes a WTDTRO track. I hope I don't need to point out that there's some humour in some of these choices...

1. LCD Soundsystem - All My Friends
2. The Spinners - It's A Shame
3. Shed Seven - Chasing Rainbows
4. Iron & Wine - Lovesong Of The Buzzard
5. Belle & Sebastian - The Boy With The Arab Strap
6. Pulp - Common People
7. Primal Scream - I'm Losing More Than I'll Ever Have
8. Housse De Racket - Synthetiseur
9. Kelis - Acapella
10. Earth, Wind & Fire - September
11. Haddaway - What Is Love?
12. Ice Cube - The Message

As a nice postscript to this tale, recently our friend Nai emailed Chris and I this picture, saying it reminded her of us. Beautiful.

Arguably, the Northside festival cost is worth it alone (approx £150) just to see how The Stone Roses perform, and with other acts that are right up my street, like Justice, Gaslight Anthem, The xx, When Saints Go Machine and James Blake, then perhaps it's too good to pass up on.

Even the presence of Snow Patrol doesn't trouble me too much (though I am drunk right now).
It isn't sold out yet either, which makes a refreshing change from the scrum that is trying to secure a UK festival ticket. On the other hand it's a no-camping festival, which is also fine by me, though means that's another thing to organise. We shall see - I'll let you know if I go.

Did you catch new Danish band When Saints Go Machine yet? Download their cover of the Verve's Bittersweet Symphony here from RCRDLBL and also here's their track Parix, which I put on The Monthly a while back (watch out for track listings of all the back issues from while I've been away).
This was 1992 I think, with Faith No More and Soundgarden supporting Guns N' Roses at Wembley Stadium, London. My mate, Matt Gregory (Greg as he was back then) is on the left and I'm second from the right. And yes, I do appear to be wearing pink tinted sunglasses. I have no defence for that one.
Loved seeing how much of a uniform we were wearing - everyone thinks they're so individual when they're growing up, but clearly not. Funny.

And on another GN'R note, when I was packing up my stuff for the move recently, I found these - bought in second hand shops at the time and sounding like they were recorded through a mattress several miles outside the venue, but I loved them anyway. Pretty chuffed I was at the two Wembley ones...

I'll try not to bore you so here's a quick checklist of the past 12 months:
Got a hella busy job
Got engaged to a beautiful Dane
Left hella busy job
Moved to Denmark
And so here we are. Music was ever present throughout that time of course, so as well as anything new that comes up, I'll post up anything here of interest from the past 12 months.
In the meantime, sad news about MCA lately. Here's one of favourites:
Rock music, to be precise.

The fact that we were (and still are) massive rock fans probably influenced our opinion - I was 14 in '91 and just finding my feet as a music fan. And loving rock/metal of course, my first musical love.

So without getting too in-depth and scientific about it, I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that 1991 has a fair claim to be one of the best years in heavy rock music ever. Prove me wrong. Here are some highlights...

<img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-yrPRi3N8u4PyF_WjZf9aLQYjicaUwECfnKOgWvOoBWas_1KqBtL15HmwQfsrzxoVzORn6fz5GCV8yI0HgYuhLlVNvrhq5X00iZYphYq02SNGIkMC5BJv-MHSFuTEKebLN3OGu2Aeb_zI/s400/illusion.jpeg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5585164952626352514" style="display: block; If you're on Twitter then you should catch up with her at @waltandperry too. She's a massive music fan and we seem to be uncannily in synch, because the two pieces she's given me put on the blog so far have been about two of my favourite musical subjects, covers and movie soundtracks. I love her cover picks below - especially the Iron & Wine and Guns N' Roses ones, which have both been favourites of mine for long time. Check out her first post here. Keep 'em coming Becks...

Resplendent Remakes: My Favorite Cover Songs

It seems every other month Hollywood is releasing a remake of a classic film, and nine out of ten times the reworked versions fall far short of the original. Anyone remember Planet of the Apes featuring Mr. Marky Mark? Yikes! But Hollywood will continue to refashion films, because it is so much easier than writing a new screenplay. Just as the film industry has a penchant for reworking scripts, the music industry has an inclination to rework songs. Songs that have been made-over are often referred to as covers. I was hoping to find the history behind the reason we refer to remakes as covers, but found nothing reputable. (I’ll NEVER trust Wikipedia.)

Anyhow, most of the time covers are tolerable at best. Quite often they make us nostalgic for the original, and angry at the individual who dares tamper with a classic (*cough*American Pie*cough*cough*Madonna*). It’s hard to do a good cover. For a cover to be really excellent it cannot be too similar to the original tune. Otherwise there is absolutely no point in rereleasing the same song that your parents played on their 8-tracks. A truly great cover should keep the basic sound of the original, but add its own unique style and flair. I’ve generously taken precious time out of my impossibly busy schedule to compile a list of my all time favorite cover tunes. Enjoy! (Or don’t.)

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj00ennXpf0ZpRebHHv-8057koQr0zECT2Y6HW0b2SU5lXL1fAdjys8UWEvSU3yICoa7kGf2IYs6iTIoGZZ0HYyvWuKy08y-w9-x4Pt1CdUbMqvSCvMPxtLrnnvU036Au2Ln6xqz7magDfB/s400/Alison+Krauss+-+Now+That+I%2527ve+Found+You+-+Front.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5577567499436354850" />
1. I Will by Alison Krauss
Blue grass phenom Krauss took a big risk with this release. I Will was originally recorded by The Beatles, arguably one of the greatest bands in history, and many individuals view their music as sacred, and the altering of the slightest piece of it a form of sacrilege.
But, Alison Krauss chose to take on the challenge and managed to produce a version of I Will that I believe is superior to the original.
There is no overly ornate production in this version. Just a banjo, steel guitar, and the mellifluous voice of Alison. Without all the extras, the listener is really able to appreciate the beauty of the melody. In addition, Krauss’s angelic voice adds an air of sweetness and innocence to the tune that transforms this song into somewhat of a lullaby. Absolutely one of my favorite performances of all time.

Fun Fact: This song was featured on the album Now That I’ve Found You: A Collection that consisted of covers of other classic tunes like Bad Company’s Atlanta and Now That I’ve Found You by The Foundations. Definitely worth checking out.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 314px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrYbyvn6wDCAv9TZxvMKwqQTWCrDTr3DfGs3m-JwQYC5vO2lytE0iz1KVUkp0HxYobxlvMTTO9uB48UvnspUAlwkOWLF-atDkSSibb3Mpq6f5R0udQOzzPMQr6glS03zpxRbritwExYgxN/s400/SuchGreatHeights-770940.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5577567492547033778" />
2. Such Great Heights by Iron and Wine
Such Great Heights was originally performed by the indie pop band The Postal Service. Their recording was great and had a sick electronic sound. However, I believe it was Mr. Sam Beam of Iron & Wine who really breathed life into the song. The lyrics to Such Great Heights are so powerful and heartfelt, yet are barely audible in The Postal Service recording.
By opting to do an acoustic version of the song, with only a few simple harmonies thrown in, listeners are allowed to actually hear and fully appreciate the deeper meaning of painfully romantic lyrics like “the freckles in our eyes are mirror images and when we kiss they’re perfectly aligned”. To steal a phrase from tweenyboppers, totally swoonworthy.
In addition, Beam has this amazingly soft and unadorned cadence to his voice that allows him to emote the lyrics in a way that adds to the depth of the words. (Okay, so I’m half in love with the fellow). If listening to this cover doesn’t make your heart flutter, you are probably made of stone.

Fun Fact: Sam Beam’s recording of this song was released for the first time on the B-side of Postal Service’s Such Great Heights single.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 304px; height: 304px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgK_z-5Pyic23LseQJFVCcc41RZk_8dkq-qjAPQmEYvfwZ7jspPZkf56rY3ntqMYX3-AYMsJB4yCcFlTZbR5ariFRfRf9OlbCq0XfMY8PMu_lP4-O1isTK6LdV9TrCVGRvTkeSA2qitcKv/s400/M29935.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5577567487950341074" />
3. Please Let Me Get What I Want by Muse
The original recording by The Smiths is still superior in my mind. Morrissey can convey a level of loneliness and heartbreak that neither Bellamy nor any other artist can match. It is for that reason, 25 years after its release, that The Smiths acoustic version remains a staple in the collection of every single Twilight-loving emo-teen in the world.
That being said, I rather enjoyed the version Muse recorded. Muse didn’t do anything profound. Just threw in a distorted bass and strummed the root note on the downbeat, like every classic punk song has supplied. But, those small changes altered the whole vibe of the song. I never imagined it possible to create a ‘feel good’ version of such a morose tune, but Muse managed to do just that.
So, because Muse was able to actually transform The Smiths' depressing tune into a song that DIDN'T make me want to slit my wrists, I give them high praise.

Fun Fact: Muse never released this song as a single, but it can be found on the B-side of the single Feeling Good Hyper Music. Apropos of nothing, I’m still mad at Bellamy for shacking up with Kate Hudson. Really makes me question his intelligence.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 350px; height: 350px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGdJjBKI6VfttmrFkeqZAtK-U3pYSQq8dTcyGVIEslKWd6NAfaLbPL5cZAzahk9GWv6LiBwH_px37LzN0UEsNZFA9EjpF-8iSitZstBE20ineYs__2EaR3H8zKaK2idLZXgZu8i9eyJ_A4/s400/Guns-N%25E2%2580%2599-Roses-%25E2%2580%2593-The-Spaghetti-Incident.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5577567486612561202" />
4. Since I Don’t Have You by Guns N' Roses
I love me some oldies and I love me some Slash, so naturally I love GN'R’s cover of The Skyliners 1958 hit. Featured on their 1994 album The Spaghetti Incident, it’s one of those odd mashups that you wouldn’t think would work, but actually does. Like Tabasco sauce and scrambled eggs.
Though GN'R kept the tempo and chord progressions of the ‘58 hit, they made a few key alterations that kept the listener from forgetting it was now Guns N' Roses singing the song. For example, in the middle of the song, Axl in spoken voice, utters this romantic interlude: “Yeah,we’re f**ked!” Axl always was the consummate badass. With help from Slash’s notorious guitar riffs and Axl’s rasp, GN'R added some sex appeal that was lacking in the original doo wop classic.

Fun Fact: Guns N' Roses are no strangers to remakes. In 1991 they earned a Grammy nomination for their cover of Wings megahit Live & Let Die.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 350px; height: 350px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAfQPM4VsX8VeI4WRw2-o7c9plefXzU2x93lb9pPy3oqxCWjWDKhtdrM5xt7Kwh0EJuGp55C7uG3xKFr3l03vuGCiSA2prkWdt92U8qSZ12hsK2FYUcjZICQ7oNWEpJJv9w4h3SK2y3ZbH/s400/Dynamite_Hack-Superfast_3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5577567483520459394" />
5. Boyz In The Hood by Dynamite Hack
Back in 1987 the rap group N.W.A. burst onto the scene with Boyz’ N Da Hood and forever changed the face of hip hop. The song was real and raw. Easy-E (gimme a sec while I pour some out for my homey), rapped about the hard life of a gangsta. He made frequent references to drinking, weapons, and even domestic violence. KIND of depressing subject matter.
Enter Dynamite Hack: A Texas-based, post-grunge band comprised of white boy prepsters. A set of young men one would never expect to tackle a gangsta rap classic. But, in the year 2000 these Abercrombie-outfitted boys recorded a cover of Boyz In the Hood on the album Superfast that went all the way to #12 on the Billboard Rock charts. Dynamite Hack never attempted to rap the lyrics to Boyz’N Da Hood, or adopt the thug persona that defined N.W.A. Instead, they recorded an all acoustic version of this old school rap anthem. It’s quite hysterical to hear a group of Birkenstock-wearing, Dave Matthews Band lookalikes strumming their guitars and softly singing the lyrics “she said something that I couldn't believe, so I grabbed the stupid bitch by her nappy ass weave”. Eleven years later it still makes me laugh. Another thing I loved about Dynamite Hack’s cover was the fact that the melody at the end of the song echoed the beautiful melody of The Beatles hit Blackbird. In one song they managed to pay homage to both the greatest rappers and greatest rockers of all time.

Fun Fact: Dynamite Hack got their name from a line in the 70’s classic comedy, Caddyshack. BONUS points for these boys!

Even if you disagree with my picks, I hope you will take with you the fact that not all song covers are Jessica Simpson’s Take My Breath Away bad. Before you cast judgment, pick up your headphones and give the artist a chance.

By: Rebecca SellittiMRWhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08054423156521196342noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4293127139881104586.post-29230215912157569602011-02-25T09:13:00.004+00:002011-02-25T09:35:43.305+00:00So, that Queen exhibition...So, I was invited to this Queen exhibition last night, and didn't really understand before I went what sort of an evening it was going to be. Turns out it was the press launch for this free exhibition, covering the early years of Queen to mark the 40th anniversary of the band's existence, and popular and busy it was too.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYc2ihu_pLSpiizCako0zCqeJCyR7rYXSaxvCOol74XHiWp5NSDuxMLjczGINbB_XGdxFmf6EfYq3nmpwXqaT6rC7WKkN-JKoRT0xVMhHN5_bxs4IZDol879aVVDJ2iH8WTCWS5ajxx3_R/s400/photo-47.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5577557328469593234" />
Brian May and Roger Taylor weren't there but there were a few 'faces' present. The lovely Sophie Ellis Bextor was there and I had a quick chat to her husband Richard Jones (who I used to work with), who's now the bassist from The Feeling. Their new single's out in three weeks and if you're a fan of knowing how the record industry works you might be interested to know that it'll come out via Universal's new policy of making it available to buy the same day it goes to radio. Lady Gaga did that recently too. Anyway, I digress.

Errr..who else was there? The bloke from Keane (much taller than I thought), Hurts (who apparently dress like that all the time), the comedian Paul Whitehouse (looked a bit lost) and also Dave Grohl and Taylor Hawkins from Foo Fighters, who are well known Queen fans.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2JVXNix_w0eA-abZco-YJJKNuXBEELJcf0D30xI_QrNdPLZMzEKtIs20-QF-rm5gVUyQ4Z-_jzm4dE4pyYE704DXyUSA2VCkYAodkkkXllldBe0MFkP51odDwiDDVDK4baiEfhhenDdNx/s400/photo-46.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5577556955894601314" />

Not sure what the point of this horse was, but for some reason it was the only photo I took. But there was free booze. However, I saw very little of the actual exhibition, because it was so rammed. But it's free, so I'll try to go back, maybe making a day of it with Brick Lane and Rough Trade East. Yes, I think I'll do that.MRWhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08054423156521196342noreply@blogger.com0
