I read about these recently in a Rolling Stone feature on the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame performances over the years. The RRHF is a bit of a foreign thing to me - it doesn't seem to get masses of coverage over here and is physically based in Cleveland, so it's not somewhere you'll easily get to going to one of the normal US tourist cities like LA or New York, so I thought it was high time I did some You Tube digging.
The first one's from 2004 and Rolling Stone claim it could be the "single greatest musical moment at any Rock Hall induction ceremony". Praise indeed. Specifically what they're talking about is at the 3m30s mark when Prince takes the song and makes it his own...
This next one's the starriest of nights they ever had - see how many you can spot, but I clocked the following there - Mick Jagger, George Harrison, Billy Joel, Bob Dylan, Jeff Beck, Ringo Starr, Bruce Springsteen, Elton John, Neil Young, The Beach Boys. Needless to say, it sounds awful.
Damn, I was hoping to put some more videos up but some of the best sounding ones aren't on Youtube, including Mike Love of The Beach Boys' speech in 1988 where he ripped into everyone in the audience, so much that when Dylan made a speech onstage later he thanked Mike Love for not mentioning him.
So that will have to be it - but have a mooch around YouTube yourself for some more clips because the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame seems to be more than worth investigating.
